Beginner’s guide: how to use gouache

Beginner’s guide: how to use gouache

Are you thinking about trying gouache? The good news is that it’s easy to get started with this popular and versatile paint. Below are some tips on how to use gouache, plus answers to common questions that might be on your mind.

What is gouache?

To give you a quick rundown, gouache (pronounced “gwash”) can be thought of as an "opaque watercolour". It's generally made from pigment, water and a binding agent, which is why the consistency and application is quite similar to watercolour paint.

How to use gouache

You can use gouache straight out of the tube, or add water to make it more translucent. Since it’s so easy to work with, this paint is ideal for everything from quick concepts to final paintings, illustrations and designs. The rich colours, affordability and beautiful matte finish has made it a popular choice for decades.

Handy hint: If your paint dries on a palette, you can reactivate it with water!

What surface is best?

Gouache can be used on both watercolour paper and canvas. If you’re planning on painting on a canvas, we’d recommend applying a primer first to prevent the paint from soaking into it.

What brushes do I use?

When you’re painting with gouache, the best type of brush to use is one with soft, flexible bristles (acrylic, gouache or watercolour brushes will do the trick).

Setting up

The beauty of gouache is that you don’t need much to get started. If you’re not sure what you should use, below is a quick checklist:

  • Gouache
  • Watercolour paper
  • Paint brushes (with soft, flexible bristles)
  • Water jar

Techniques

Gouache is super versatile and can be used for a range of techniques. Below are a couple of basic techniques you might like to try, but there are plenty of others out there to discover. So don’t be shy – experiment, play around and find different ways to use your gouache paints.

Colour blending

Create interesting effects by blending colours directly on your surface for subtle or bold colour changes. All you need to do is lay down one colour on your surface, then paint onto the edges with another colour until they start to mix together and create a smooth colour transition. Gouache colours blend beautifully, giving you an endless colour palette to work with.

Dry brushing

The dry brush technique is where you use a small amount of paint on a dry paint brush to create scratchy brush strokes. You can do this by dipping your brush in paint, wiping off the excess and gently brushing it across your page.

Washes

A wash is a thin layer of colour that’s often created using diluted ink or watercolours. To achieve this effect, add water to your gouache paints and spread it evenly across your surface.

Splatters

Flicking gouache onto your artwork is a great way to create the effect of stars or water spray. This technique is often used over the top of watercolour galaxy paintings using white gouache.

Can you seal gouache?

Yes! You can use one to two coats of acrylic spray varnish or our Premium Acrylic Medium Gloss to seal your gouache paintings. If you don’t want to add a varnish, framing your work behind glass is another effective way to protect it.

Sketching your artwork first

Do you want to sketch your artwork first? Gouache has an opaque finish which means that it will cover up pencil marks as you paint. We’d still recommend pressing lightly when you’re sketching or planning your artwork to make sure it doesn’t show through lighter colours or dent the page.

Store leftover paint in an airtight container

If you haven’t finished your painting yet and need to save your paint for later, pop it in an airtight container to keep it fresh. If it does dry out, don’t stress because you can reactivate it with water if you need to.

Can you use gouache with other paints?

You sure can! Gouache works with any water-based paints, including acrylic, ink and watercolours. So, if you have any of these paints lying around at home, play around and try out some different effects. For example, you might like to use watercolour to add shadows or translucent areas to your painting, or use gouache to your watercolour paintings to create opaque details.

Handy hint: You can also draw over the top of your gouache paintings with pencils, pens or markers.

We hope this guide has answered your questions and helped you to start your gouache journey! If you need some inspiration, head over to our gouache ideas article to get your creativity flowing.
