We have a lot of fun with acrylic paints and we’re always on the hunt for inspiration. If you’re as much of a fan as we are, or you want to try it for the first time, we’ve gathered some of our favourite acrylic painting ideas that you can try at home. Check it out and get inspired.

1. Gemstone

Grab a round canvas and turn it into a diamond! This gemstone painting can take a little bit of patience, but we also found the process super satisfying and the end result is well worth the time.

2. Abstract

 Abstract painting makes a great addition to your living space and is a fun way to explore colour and form. You might like to practice in an art journal or on some spare paper before taking colour to canvas, but do what works best for you.

3. Tropical plants

Here’s one for all those nature lovers out there. Bring the outdoors indoors with a tropical plant painting. We love the way Stefanie Calos has put some gold accents on the leaves to add something a little bit special.

4. Rock animal

You can turn a rock into almost anything with a little bit of creativity. For this acrylic painting idea we had a few rocks to choose from, but we were really drawn to one that was shaped like a sleeping tiger.

5. Field of flowers

What’s your favourite flower? Whether it’s poppies or sunflowers, paint a field of them that will last a lifetime. For our poppy field painting, we used Dimension Acrylics to create some 3D effects.

6. Chain pull painting

You might have heard of string painting, but what about chain pull painting? For this project, you’ll need to lay down some white paint mixed with acrylic medium. Next, dip your chain or string in some paint, lay it onto the wet background and pull it through the paint. You can check out the technique in our tutorial.

7. Fluid art

Fluid, or ‘pour art’, is a trending style that anyone can create. It can take a few tries to get the hang of it, but the learning process is all part of the fun!

8. Hand painting

Here’s one for the whole family to enjoy! Lay down some masking tape to create a word or picture, and then cover the canvas in hand prints. Once it’s dry, you can then peel off the tape to reveal your masterpiece.

9. Leaf triptych

Creating a simple leaf triptych is a great way to add some life to your living area. You can use our leaf templates for this project, or you might like to have a look around your garden, the internet and some books to choose your own designs.

10. Pendulum painting

Get your creativity in full swing with pendulum painting. For this technique, mix acrylic paint with flow medium and pour it into an empty craft glue bottle. You will then need to tie your bottle to a beam or rig (like a pendulum) and position your canvas underneath it. Next is the fun part – take the cap off and let it start swinging.

If you like patterns, this acrylic painting idea is right up your alley. Use a pencil to draw your design onto a canvas, and add some colour with acrylic paint.

While we’re on the topic of nature, one of our favourite flowers to paint is the orchid. Painting them against a simple background really accentuates their beautiful details and looks great on your wall.

Let your creativity take flight with a bird painting. Try using a palette knife to create the feathers and build texture.

17. Leonid Afremov Inspired

We couldn’t create an acrylic painting ideas list without including our Leonid Afremov inspired piece. While Afremov mostly works in oils, we used Dimension Acrylics to create similar textures and effects. Try it for yourself!
